As viscous and organic as the maple syrup flowing freely in their native New England, the stalwart string band The Devil Makes Three poured into Saxapahaw's Haw River Ballroom on Jan. 16 to launch their tour supporting "Chains are Broken," their first album of new originals in 5 years. The sold out crowd was loud and lively, swept away on the dynamic tide, an atypical acoustic alchemy at once primal and cerebral. Newly expanded to a quartet with the addition of drummer Stefan Amidon, their rollicking roots revival lassoed high-energy country, blues and folk to sweeten the soul and warm the winter eve.
